Toys in Yiwu: where the trade sits and what to check

Toys trade from floor 1 of International Trade City District 1, where the official floor plan groups plush, inflatable, electric and general toys under the flower and toy categories. The district is the oldest of the five, opened in 2002, and the operator reports more than 10,000 booths with an export share above 60%.

Toys are a category where compliance work is part of the purchase, not an afterthought: the same stall may sell items aimed at several markets, so the destination country's rules decide which documentation you actually need.

What to check before you order

Ask for the EN 71 test report when the destination is in the European Union, and ask which laboratory issued it and on which batch. A report that predates the current production run tells you nothing about the cartons in front of you.

Confirm the packaging and the marking on the product itself, because retail buyers in different markets read different things from the same box. Write both the specification and the destination market into the purchase order rather than relying on a sample.

Where the mistakes happen

The common failure in this category is a sample from a display line and bulk from a different factory, where the electric toys look identical but the battery cells and the plastic differ. Seal the approved sample and put the sample reference in the order.

Second failure: mixing batches inside one carton to hit a price. Agree a sampling inspection against a written defect list before shipment, and take photographs of the cartons as they are packed.
