How to plan one sourcing day at Yiwu Huangyuan Clothing Market

Huangyuan is a dedicated clothing market in Yiwu's Xiuhu business district, which keeps it away from the International Trade City districts. Fix your category and your floors before you enter, and one day is enough to shortlist properly.

Getting there and setting the day's target

Huangyuan serves one trade: clothing. Trousers and denim sit on floor 1, men's wear and leather garments on floor 2, women's wear on floor 3, sportswear, sleepwear and wool sweaters on floor 4, and children's wear on floor 5. Because the building is organised by garment type rather than by mixed commodity, your day should be defined by two floors at most.

The market sits in the Xiuhu business district, closer to central Yiwu than the International Trade City districts, so travel between hotels and the building is short. Confirm current trading hours with the market or your supplier before you travel, and plan to arrive early enough for a full first pass before lunch.

The morning: map one floor end to end

Start on the floor that matches your main category and walk it end to end without stopping to buy. Note booth numbers, photograph styles that fit your range, and mark the aisles where comparable booths cluster. Clothing booths repeat styles quickly, and the first pass exists to tell you which stretches of the floor are worth a second look.

On the second pass, stop at the shortlisted booths. Ask what minimum quantity they accept per style and per colour, have fabric and workmanship samples pulled while you talk, and record the booth number with every sample you collect. Do not close an order on the first conversation; prices and quantity breaks improve once a booth sees that you are comparing.

Lunch and sample handover

Floor 6 holds the car park, the customer service centre, a food court and a cinema, which makes it the practical midday base. Eat inside the building rather than leaving for a restaurant; keeping samples, notes and cartons in one place protects an afternoon of work.

Use the break to sort what you have collected. Label samples by booth, write the agreed quantity next to each item, and decide which booths should hold goods for later collection. When you go back upstairs, hand each shortlisted booth your consolidation address and ask them to keep the goods until your forwarder collects.

The afternoon: the second floor and the revisit

The afternoon is for your second category. A women's wear buyer moves from floor 3 to floor 4 for wool sweaters and sportswear; a children's wear buyer can pair floor 5 with floor 1 for denim bottoms. Adjacent categories share factories more often than buyers expect, so the neighbouring floor is a genuine second source, not a fallback.

Reserve the last hour for revisiting the two or three best booths of the morning. This is where real terms are agreed: quantity per style, colour splits, packaging, labelling and the date the goods will be ready. Photograph each order sheet and the booth's name card before you leave the floor.

Closing the day

Finish at the customer service centre on floor 6 if you need directions to the collection points or help reaching a booth that was closed. Collect receipts for anything paid on the day, and keep them with the order sheets rather than in separate pockets.

Before leaving, confirm with every booth that has goods on hold: what is packed, what is pending, and who arranges delivery to your consolidation warehouse. A brief confirmation per booth prevents the most common failure of a sourcing day, which is goods left behind with no pickup arranged.

Trading hours, booth line-ups and floor layouts change; confirm with the market or your supplier before you travel.
